At United Abilities, our mission is to uplift and empower people living with disabilities, fostering a diverse and inclusive community that emphasizes health and well-being. We are dedicated to supporting individuals in developing life skills that enhance friendships, community interaction, and, most importantly, build confidence.
One innovative approach to achieving these goals is through tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs) like Dungeons & Dragons (D&D). This imaginative game offers a unique platform for capacity building and peer support, enabling participants to develop essential life skills in an engaging and supportive environment.
Building Social Skills and Confidence
D&D requires players to collaborate, negotiate, and make collective decisions, mirroring real-life social interactions. Participants assume various roles, which encourages them to step into different perspectives, enhancing empathy and understanding. This role-playing aspect is particularly beneficial for individuals with intellectual disabilities, as it provides a safe space to practice social scenarios and build confidence.
Evidence-Based Benefits
Research supports the positive impact of D&D on social skills development. A study published in the journal Autism found that autistic adults who participated in D&D sessions experienced improved social interactions and increased confidence. The structured yet imaginative nature of the game provided a comfortable environment for participants to engage without the pressure to mask their traits.1
Additionally, researchers at the University of South Australia are exploring the potential of TTRPGs like D&D to promote social growth in neurodivergent individuals and those living with disabilities. Their findings suggest that these games can enhance communication skills, foster collaboration, and build self-esteem.2
Capacity Building and Peer Support at United Abilities
At United Abilities, we recognise the transformative power of such interactive experiences. Our group-based activities are designed to engage participants in meaningful social interactions, promoting personal growth and community participation. By incorporating games like D&D into our programs, we provide opportunities for individuals to develop negotiation skills, practice role-playing, and build confidence in a fun and supportive setting.
Through these capacity-building initiatives, they participate in social situations, make informed decisions, and express themselves more effectively. The peer support inherent in group activities fosters a sense of belonging and mutual encouragement, essential components in building lasting friendships and community connections.
